Classroom assessment
What is the product? In early April 2023, existing Turnitin customers with English product licenses will have access to a new AI writing detection capability. The detection feature will detect GPT3 and GPT3.5, the foundational technology of ChatGPT, with very high accuracy based on clean lab data. To maintain a less than 1 percent false positive rate, Turnitin only flags writing submissions when the detector is 98 percent sure it is written by AI. Integrated into the educator’s existing workflows, the detection capability will provide educators and administrators with a report showing an overall percentage of the document that AI writing tools may have generated.
What problem does it solve? AI generated text is top-of-mind for everyone. Particularly for education, what does it mean for students and the future of original thought? Turnitin has always maintained that teaching is a human endeavor and that technology is only a tool to assist educators. No technology should make a determination of misconduct.
